After a brief look at the science of self-regulation, we move into the main twenty-minute guided meditation.

 

This is a longer Focused Attention practice, where you will actively work to hold your attention stable, building the "mental muscle" required to override distractions and manage emotional impulses.

How the Executive Control Network Works

 

Your brain's executive control is a set of mental skills, seated in the prefrontal cortex, that allows you to manage your attention, working memory, and impulses.

 

When you're under pressure, a rush of emotion can "hijack" this system, leading to reactive, poor-quality decisions. Meditation is a direct training method to prevent this.
